Terminology

*1 Feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) is a pathogenic virus that is spread by contact with matter such as the saliva of an infected cat. If the disease develops upon infection, a cat's immune system is weakened and symptoms such as stomatitis and dirrhea develop. Ultimately the disease results in death. Rather than developing immediately after infection, the immune strength of an infected cat usually decreases gradually over a span of around 5 years.

*2 Feline leukemia virus (FeLV) is a pathogenic virus that is spread by contact with matter such as the saliva, tears, feces, urine and milk of an infected cat. Infection causes not only leukemia to develop but also a variety of symptoms such as lowered immune strength, anemia and lymphoma. However, for some cases when symptoms are not visible or are light, complete recovery has been observed.
